Luxembourg City Under Occupation: Fortress, Ruin, and Liberation on Foot
This two-day, full-day walking tour traces Luxembourg City’s wartime landscape from the 1940 invasion through German occupation, resistance, and liberation, following the real topography of defense and survival across the Grund, Ville Haute, and the fortress rim. We move through the Bock casemates, Chemin de la Corniche, Fort Thüngen, the Gëlle Fra, central squares, and surviving civic and religious sites to read the city in its limestone walls, tunnels, plaques, and remembered absences, with a sober look at how civilians endured and how the urban fabric still bears the marks of occupation. The route concludes at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial when it fits the narrative of liberation, loss, and the return of Allied power to a city that had been engineered for siege long before the 20th century.
